Body weight and body condition are not the same
The number on the scale should be interpreted together with body condition and muscle condition. Two animals at the same weight may have very different body composition and needs.
Mechanical load and movement
Excess adipose tissue increases joint loading during daily activity and may worsen mobility in patients with musculoskeletal disease. Loss of muscle also compromises support, stability and functional recovery.
Monitoring belongs to the plan
When weight management is indicated, gradual targets, dietary adjustment, monitoring and preservation of muscle are more important than rapid change. The plan should account for concurrent disease and activity level.
